What is your relationship to yourself, others, and the environment like?

With a priority to establish and maintain a secure attachment to the self and others, we will examine and soothe our relationships with the systems in which we live, the people around us, and our capacity & limitations. We will do so by consulting our body's wisdom, using visualization and narrative inquiry (prioritizing curiosity).

You are invited to question the statement “that’s just the way it is” when it’s used to explain things. We are relational creatures and we live within systems of power. We will challenge the belief that there is only one way to approach a problem. We will explore your story and consult the knowledge your body has while acknowledging the pieces that make up you.

Modalities

  • Narrative

We will examine the stories that we tell ourselves and others about different areas of our lives. We work with the belief that you are the expert of your experiences and that therapy is a collaborative process that we lead with curiosity. Narrative therapists are mindful of the influences of systemic powers; within the therapeutic relationship, we deconstruct our position of power and privilege your agency.

  • Neuropsychotherapy

Our approach to therapy is trauma-informed and backed by neuroscience, understanding how trauma affects our physiology and nervous system. Integrating the knowledge that our brain’s primary goal is to help us survive, we include psychoeducation and practices that exercise neuroplasticity (the brain’s ability to change).

  • Somatic Attachment

We consult the wisdom of the body (“soma”) to heal attachment trauma. Attachment trauma is a wounding to our system, the mind-body’s capacity to feel safe, cared for, and connected with others and our selves. Secure attachment is consistently the goal of psychotherapy; with SA, we work toward a consistent felt sense of connection and safety.

  • Relational

We are relational creatures and we live within systems of power. We approach therapy from the perspective that we are in relation to each other, ourselves, and our surrounding. As the practitioner, we are de-centered but not neutral. We understand that our therapeutic relationship (between patient and therapist) itself is ground for healing and fostering secure attachment that go beyond the therapy room.

  • EMDR

Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing is a form of trauma therapy that uses bilateral stimulation to access implicit (“filed away”) memories and process in a safe container. ROO’s approach to EMDR is attachment- and trauma-informed. Therapeutic alliance (patients’ bond to the therapist and feeling safe enough) is paramount for this treatment and that first step may take numerous sessions to develop.

  • Clinical hypnosis

What we focus on gets amplified. Hypnotherapy is a form of targeted meditation. Patients are guided into a trance state (a natural state that one finds oneself in routinely - e.g. daydreaming, zoning out) with focus attention, where new neuropathways can be built. Clinical hypnosis engages neuroplasticity. All hypnosis is self-hypnosis: the patient has control at all times.
Note: Clinical hypnosis is not hypnotism.
